Johann Andreas Röschlaub (Lichtenfels 1768 -1835 Oberdischingen) war Mediziner, Naturphilosoph und Brownianer sowie Hochschullehrer in Bamberg und Landshut. Er zählte in seiner Zeit zu den einflussreichsten und zugleich umstrittensten Ärzten. Schon in seiner… Dissertation beschäftigte er sich mit dem Konzept des schottischen Arztes John Brown, das er 1798 in seiner ersten großen Schrift "Untersuchungen über die Pathogenie" weiterführte. Er entwickelte seine eigene Erregungstheorie, die unter Einfluss von Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling und Johann Gottlieb Fichte Browns mechanisches Modell durch ein dynamisch-prozesshaftes ersetzte. 1799 begründete er die Zeitschrift "Magazin zur Vervollkommnung der theoretischen und praktischen Heilkunde". Sie erschien bis 1809 und diente als Diskussionsforum für neue medizinische Auffassungen. Unterstützung fand Röschlaub besonders bei einer jungen Generation von Physiologen, während Vertreter der traditionellen Medizin, besonders Christoph Wilhelm Hufeland, seinen Ansichten mit Misstrauen begegneten. - Papier tlw. leicht gebräunt.

October 1768 in Lichtenfels, hatte in Bamberg und Würzburg Medicin studirt und im Jahre 1795 in Bamberg die Doctorwürde erlangt. Schon im folgenden Jahre wurde er hier zum Professor e.o., 1798 zum Professor ord. der Pathologie und medicinischen Klinik und zum Hospitalarzt am allgemeinen Krankenhause ernannt; 1802 folgte er einem Rufe in gleicher Eigenschaft nach Landshut, wurde hier im Jahre 1824 in den Ruhestand versetzt, im Jahre 1826 aber, nach Uebersiedlung der Universität von Landshut nach München, wieder zum Professor der Medicin nach München berufen und in dieser Stellung ist er bis zu seinem am 7.Juli 1835, auf einer Erholungsreise zu seinem Freunde, dem Grafen Schenk-Castell, auf dessen Schlosse zu Oberdischingen bei Ulm, erfolgten Tode verblieben. Roeschlaub ist der Begründer des unter dem Namen "Erregungstheorie" bekannten auf den Grundsätzen des Brownianismus beruhenden Systems der Medicin; seine Lehren hat er zuerst in Weickard's Magazin der Arzneikunst (Bd.1, Heft 2), sodann aber vorzugsweise in seinen "Untersuchungen über die Pathologie" und in dem von ihm redigirtem "Magazin zur Vervollkommnung der Heilkunde" niedergelegt. Der grosse Beifall, dessen sich die Erregungstheorie Seitens der deutschen Aerzte Anfangs erfreut hatte, war nicht von langer Dauer, und zwar wurde es den Gegner von Roeschlaub's, welche sich vorzugsweise aus der Reihe der Anhänger vitalistischer Theorien recrutirten, um so leichter, die Einseitigkeiten, Willkürlichkeiten und Irrthümer des Systems aufzudecken und zu bekämpfen, als ihm selbst, trotz des Fanatismus, mit welchem er seine Ansichten vortrug, die Ueberzeugungstreu fehlte, so dass er sich in zahlreiche Widersprüche verfing und schliesslich seine Principien discreditirte. Schon in dem im Jahre 1804 erschienen "Entwurf eines Lehrbuches der allgemeinen Iaterie und ihre Propädeutik" und noch mehr in seinem "Lehrbuch der besonderen Nosologie, Iatreusiodologie und Iaterie" (1807-1810) trat er als Anhänger der Naturphilosophie auf, der er zudem durch Einführung der Lehre des Paracelsius vom "Krankheitskeime" und theosophischen Träumereien einen mystischen Beigeschmack gab. Bald aber vollzog sich an ihm die dritte und letzte Wandlung, welche ihm schliesslich in die Arme des altenempirisch-dogmatischen Medicin zurückgeführt hat. In dem von ihm herausgegebenen "Neuen Magazin für klinische Medicin", von welchem 4 Stücke (1816-1817) erschienen sind, beurtheilt er unbefangen und einsichtsvoll den Standpunkt des rationellen Arztes und Klinikers; er hat die Mystik abgestreift, die naturphilosophische Phraseologie aufgegeben, und mit Offenheit zeit er selbst der früher von ihm begangenen Irrthümer, der Pseudo-Medicin", denen er auf Grund des Brownianismus gehuldigt hat.
