Paperback. Condition: New. This groundbreaking book opens the door on the missing record of South Los Angeles juvenile gangs. It is the result of the unique friendship that developed between John Quicker and Akil Batani-Khalfani, aka Bird, who collaborated to show how structural marginality transformed hang-out street groups of non-White juveniles into gangs, paving the way for the rise of the infamous Crips and Bloods. Before Crips uses a macro historical analysis to sort through political and economic factors to explain the nature of gang creation. The authors mine a critical archive, using direct interviews with original gang members as well as theory and literature reviews, to contextualize gang life and gang formation. They discuss (and fuss and cuss about) topics ranging from the criminal economy and conceptions of masculinity to racial and gendered politics and views of violence. Their insider/outsider approach not only illuminates gang values and organization, but what they did and why, and how they grew in a backdrop of inequality and police brutality that came to a head with the 1965 Watts Rebellion.Providing an essential understanding of early South Los Angeles gang life, Before Crips explains what has remained constant, what has changed, and the roots of the violence that continues.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 2,0, University of Paderborn, language: English, abstract: This term paper is set out to investigate how Jewish humour is represented in 'The Nanny' and what kind of affect it has on the viewers. To shed light on this matter, this research paper will first talk about the way humour is used in Jewish history in order to handle and cope with the past and the way it might vary depending on the medium for which it is used for. These findings and elements will be taken into consideration for the following analysis of the first and last season of The Nanny series, since some audiences have mentioned a negative change in humour and content in comparison to the first released episodes. Afterwards, these comparisons and findings will once again be compared to general reviews of the audience, thereby, this term paper wants to answer the question of the function of humour in The Nanny and whether the viewers accept this way of processing the past or if it failed by ridiculing history. When I was a child, I watched The Nanny every day after school and enjoyed every minute of it. I laughed; I cried and felt for every character on screen. However, the only thing I never really understood until I was older, was the Jewish humour, or rather the jokes, which they make about the Jewish traditions and religion. I laughed anyway, because the atmosphere and setting in which it was told, was set to make you laugh. However, after learning everything about the history of the Jewish religion, re-watching the show felt slightly different. It was still entertaining and meant to be funny, but there was some seriousness and uncomfortable feeling going along with it and personally raised the question of how The Nanny series had been perceived among the Jewish community.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, University of Paderborn, language: English, abstract: This term paper is set out to investigate the rise of fanfictions, the reasons as to why they became particularly popular among women and what sort of circumstances and settings are used the most. However, considering these settings, this term paper will put its main focus on homosexual relationships/fanfictions, to investigate the way masculinity is depicted. Since there are many instances in which men resemble women, it raises the question. Do fanfiction writers change the image of masculinity in order to experiment and act out their sexual fantasies because it is easier and more enjoyable to write about partners, who are considered ¿equal¿ in terms of their sex.
