A VG clean copy of the author's scarce first book. Most charming. The pictures are very pretty and the children represented in them like real children as they are to be seen in nurseries. The excellent stories of L.C. display a delicate fancy, and will be read with pleasure, for their literary merit, by grown people as well as children. - The Times, 1883. The English children's writer, novelist, and dramatist Lucy Lane Clfford better known as Mrs. W. K. Clifford, was an English novelist and journalist, and the wife of the philosopher William Kingdon Clifford, whom she met whilst studying art in London. The Clifford's home became a gathering place for distinguished literary and scientific persons of the day, including Charles Darwin, Herbert Spencer, John Tynall, Thomas Huxley, Henry James, Rudyard Kipling, James Russell Lowell, George Eliot, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Violet Hunt and Leslie Stephen.
