Octavo, green textured boards (hardcover), gilt lettering, [56] pp. Fine. From Foreword: PUchas His Pilgrimes, a collection of travel accounts, was assembled by an English clergyman, Samuel Purchas, and printed in 1625. The section from that third part reproduced here describes the four voyages of the English navigator, Henry Hudson, who, under English and Dutch auspices, sought for a northern passage to the Orient between 1607 and 1611. Although the river, the strait, and the bay which bear Hudson's name indicate some of the regions in which he sailed, he was not their discoverer. Nevertheless, Hudson's explorations in these northerly latitudes added greatly to the store of geographical knowledge. As an immediate consequence of his voyages, the English established fur trapping posts along the Hudson Bay, and the Dutch laid claim to the Hudson River Valley. Hudson's first two voyages of 1607 and 1608 were sponsored by the English Muscovy Company. As Hudson vainly sought for a passage across the North Pole, his journals are replete with entries showing the difficult conditions under which the voyages were made. The Dutch East India Company sponsored Hudson's third voyage in 1609. It was on this trip that he sailed into the Hudson River and explored as far as the site of what is today Albany. As he sailed back out of the river he commented that one side was called "Manna-hata." There we saw no people to trouble us." On the passage home Hudson stopped at Dartmouth, where the English authorities refused to allow him to proceed to Holland. They informed Hudson that he and the other Englishmen in his crew ought to henseforth serve their own country, not the Dutch. A new company was formed in England soon after to finance Hudson's fourth search for a northern passage. Discovery & Exploration, New York, Americana, U.S.-iana, U. S.
