Bankruptcy reform was a major economic and political issue in eighteenth and nineteenth-century Britain. This treatise sharply criticizes the existing laws on debt, recovery and bankruptcy and calls for their repeal. The author argues that the existing punishments (debtor's prison or exile) are unjust and do little to serve as a deterrent. He also points out that the existing law incentivizes predatory, frivolous or even false claims, and calls for the appointment of commissioners to help determine the legitimacy of bankruptcy suits. Popular in the 1780s and 1790s, Chippendale-style bindings like our example were influenced by the "elegant neoclassicism" of the period and feature gilt ornaments with classically inspired designs (Bennett).
