First edition of the author's prize-winning resumé of his successful experiments undertaken as director of the Rouen Botanic Garden to prove that vegetable colourants could be obtained from local plants to replace imported exotic dyes for wool and cotton. He increased the number of plants containing vegetable colourants; among his tangible achievements were cotton velvets coloured in a magnificent red. The work contains hundreds of formulas for natural dyes and paints after plants, fruits, insects (includ ing cochineal), and other elements from nature. The last part of the work (pp361-404) comprises a table containing an index arranged by colours of natural dyeing formulas. The work, presented in 1772 and awarded a life pension of 1000 livres, was published at the expense of the government. The dedication is to Charles-Alexandre de Calonne, Controller of Finance. Louis-Alexandre Dambourney (1722-95), a descendant of a family of wealthy Rouen merchants, was interested in painting and botany and received a broad education; he was equally proficient in arts and sciences and had travelled widely in France. In his preface he states that he was inspired by Le Pileur d'Appligny's Essai sur les moyens de perfectionner l'Art de la Teinture (1770) to Research colourants in indigenous plants. On his return to Rouen, he wrote a treatise on planting the rose madder in Normandy that had adapted to the local climate producing a variety superior to imported species. (cf.
