Born Marie de Castellane, in 1857 she married Prince Antoni Radziwill , a descendant of the powerful Radziwill family which owned large estates in Silesia, Posen and Russia, and spent a large part of her life in Berlin. Mario Nicolis di Robilant (1855 -1943), the recipient of the letters, was an Italian general of the Kingdom of Italy who actively participated in the World War I, mostly at the head of the Italian Fourth Army. In 1885 he was appointed as the Italian Military Attaché in Berlin, and brought a letter of introduction to the Radziwills. He left Berlin in 1889 by which time there had developed a friendship with Marie Radziwill, which lasted until her death in 1915. (Biographical details from the Introduction and Wikipedia). A very good copy of this book with the very scarce dustjacket.
