Guillame Dupre's splendid gilded copper medal, in the French group (pictured on the cover), celebrates the second birthday of the heir, the future Louis XIII, son of Henri IV and Marie de' Medici. The medal's reverse depicts the king and queen in the guise of Roman deities Mars and Pallas Athena, with the child Louis holding the helmet of Mars and resting one foot on a dolphin.

Sin dalla sua fondazione (1982). l'Associazione Amici del Bargello ha inserito nel suo programma una voce « pubblicazioni » relativa alle opere del Museo. La loro varietà, se da un lato stimola l'intervento di spec…ialisti di diversa esperienza, dall'altro esige una imponente revisione museografica e scientifica. Molte sezioni del Museo sono già state riordinate secondo un criterio cronologico topografico e sono ora disponibili a ricerche specifiche. Tra le altre, le collezioni del medagliere. che dispongono di un sommario ma famoso catalogo ottocentesco (puntualmente redatto da I.B. Supino). postulavano una revisione aggiornata ed una documentazione fotografica adeguata da eseguirsi ex novo. Questo progetto è stato particolarmente caldeggiato da Ulrich Midderdorf prevedendo di poter redigerne una parte. in collaborazione con Graham Pollard. La sua recente scomparsa ha indotto molti degli Amici del Bargello a realizzare almeno parzialmente le sue aspirazioni, essendo disponibile proprio nelle sue mani il manoscritto di Pollard relativo alle medaglie del Rinascimento. Le medaglie del Rinascimento del Bargello saranno pubblicate in tre volumi, dei quali il primo dedicato al Quattrocento, il secondo e il terzo al Cinquecento. È stata cura dell'Associazione che il materiale illustrativo, tutto eseguito ad hoc, comprendesse numerosissimi particolari atti a consentire di legare le medaglie alle « arti maggiori » contemporanee. Per la prima volta il testo inglese è accompagnato dalla traduzione italiana; ciò consentirà una più larga divulgazione di una tradizione di studio finora leggibile solo in inglese.
