Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Not Stated (illustrator). First edition. A first edition of this biography of Sir William Fairbairn, partially written by himself, and completed and edited by William Pole. The first edition of this uncommon work in the publisher's original cloth binding. Sir William Fairbairn (1789-1874) was a Scottish civil engineer, structural engineer and shipbuilder. It was Fairbairn who conceived the idea of a box girder to cross the Menai Strait. He was also one of the first engineers to investigate into the failures of structures, including the collapse of textile mills and boiler explosions, and into metal fatigue in particular. In 1854 he became the third president of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. In this volume, written partially by himself and completed and edited by William Pole, is an account of the life of Sir William Fairbairn. 44 pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally smart, though faded and marked to the spine, with light shelf wear to the extremities and to the head of the spine. Both hinges are starting but are holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for the odd spot to the first and last few pages. Very Good. book.

pp. xviii, 567, (i) General Lists. Contemporary calf, newly rebacked, heraldic book-plate of SYSTON PARK, subsequent presentation book-label of the Swansea Devonian Society to Swansea Public library, tiny stamp of the Library on the title-page and in the occasional top margin of the text, without the half-title, in other ways a very nice copy. *Syston Park Hall, built in 1775 to the designs of John Lanwith, for Sir John Thorold. The hall was demolished in 1925. It was the seat of the Thorold baronets, who had relocated from Cranwell Manor. The 9th and 10th baronets both served as High Sheriff of Lincolnshire, in 1778 and 1822 respectively. The 10th baronet commissioned architect Lewis Vulliamy in 1822-4 to build a new library which was then richly stocked with rare books and manuscripts, including a copy of the Gutenberg Bible. On his death in 1831 the property passed to his widow Mary Anne, who married Sir Charles Ogle, Bt in 1834. The contents of the house were dispersed in sales held in 1884 and 1923 and the house demolished soon afterwards.
