About the book >.>.> A halo of mystery hung about the very existence of The Dog and Badger Inn during the Middle Ages, for nowhere could it be tra…ced among the tenements and other real estate "to the late Priory of Medmenham in any way belonging," although adjacent to the monastery holding of benefice glebe. The situation cleared when it became evident the freehold formed part of the "land and tenements pertaining to the Vicarage of Medmenham" conveyed to James Duffield and Frances his wife as a marriage portion. The story gradually unfolding shows how similar movements may have started elsewhere. The disappearance of a once familiar church house may not then prove so puzzling with closer knowledge of fundamental facts and contemporary conditions. Other parts of this brief survey recount how village life took shape. The first settlement, the use of waterways, the appearance of roadways, social contacts, with the religious instinct, all contributed something to the general set up. These obscure elements may not point to any.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. Immediate dispatch from Somerset. Nice older book in good condition. Some tanning wear and marking due to age. Pages excellent. Year 1958. Hardcover. English. See images for condition. About the book >.>.> Not many years later Mr. Hudson decided to part with his interests in this neighbourhood. He con…veyed them to a dealer in real estate, Mr. Hossack, who divided the property into portions convenient for disposal. Danesfield House, its park and gardens, with Kingswood, Bockmer Farm, and the woods, including the advowson of the benefice, with a group of cottages across the Thames near Frog Mill Farm, passed to Mrs. Hornby Lewis, whose country home had been previously in Cheshire. She took pleasure in devising improvements. The grounds near the house were laid out afresh; an ornamental garden was formed with paved walks and lily ponds, overlooking a rustic glen which had been transported from Yorkshire. The summer house on the cliff edge came from Scotland. A marble and bronze chimney piece in the salon, added when the room was remodelled (1920), is the replica of a similar work in the Palace of Versailles. It had been lost during World War I, and was rescued from a railway.
