Werner Bischof was working on the photos for this boo…k when his car fell off a cliff in the Andes and he was killed. Robert Frank and Pierre Verger completed this book after Bischof's death. From the book jacket: " Here are the bleak and rugged tablelands of the Upper Andes, a world apart in the high border country between Peru and Bolivia, where the "Indios," the lonely descendants of the Incas, scratch out a meager living amidst silent poverty and rich traditions." No dustjacket, NEAR FINE, clean, unmarked boards with no foxing, no soiling, no dents no bumps, small area on front free endpaper where price sticker was removed, a small white scratch and previous owner's name and address creme-colored textured cloth with stamped design.

The book and jacket are in very good condition, the jacket has a fair amount of shelf rubbing present, the fore-edge and the bottom of the jacket and the jacket spine in particular have some areas missing including a small bottom portion of the jacket spine and s…ome areas of discoloring or folding, the jacket was wrapped at some point in brodart but the inner flaps were not fully wrapped. There are also several stains on the jacket. Apart from a former owners writing on the first paste-down and some pencil on the bottom fore-edge corner on every page notating page number after the title page beginning on the dedications page, and some writing on the page opposite the title page the text and images inside appear clean and clear throughout. The text is bilingual English and Spanish, with at the end of the books a Spanish version of the introduction written in English. Captions appear in English and Spanish as well. 'With Pierre Verger's Indians of Peru, The Pocahontas Press introduces to the United States a photographer whose work has been published in his native France, in England and in the ARgentine. Turning his back upon the comfortable but prosaic life which was his family heritage, Verger has for some years lived and traveled widely in the South Sea Islands, Africa, South and Central America.
