hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Publication: London, Chapman and Hall, 1878 Formatting: 8vo, pp. xvi, 607. Condition Report: Good. The original green cloth binding remains sound and structurally secure, though it exhibits moderate wear consistent with its age. The boards show light rubbing and mild scuffing to the extremities, with the blind-stamped knotwork motifs remaining distinct. The gilt lettering and central star device to the spine remain pleasantly bright; however, the spine presents noticeable chipping, fraying, and a small tear to the head, alongside typical bumping at the tail. The corners are bumped and slightly rubbed through the cloth to the boards. Internally, the uncut text block is firmly bound, exhibiting typical age-related toning and some darkening to the outer page edges. A neat, contemporary ownership signature in ink is present to the foot of the front free endpaper. Catalogue Note: This is the true first UK edition of Pierce and Wheeler's comprehensive reference work, which originally debuted in America in 1872. Issued unillustrated in its primary green cloth binding, this volume is notable for having been printed by Charles Dickens and Evans at the Crystal Palace Press, a firm co-managed by the author's eldest son, Charles Dickens Jr. The book bears a standard contemporary ownership signature ("King") to the foot of the front free endpaper. While later memorial editions and American printings are abundant, this specific early UK printing remains uncommon on the open market. An essential companion for the devoted Dickensian, The Dickens Dictionary offers a meticulous and exhaustive guide to the vast array of characters, locations, and principal incidents that populate the beloved author's novels and tales. Compiled with scholarly dedication, this reference work serves as a key to unlocking the complex, interconnected world of Charles Dickens, ensuring no minor figure or obscure plot point is lost to the modern reader.
