(Physical Science Study Committee) è un Comitato che si è proposto di mobilitare celebri fisici teorici, ricercatori, esperti di problemi didattici, insegnanti di fisica, con lo scopo di dare agli Stati Uniti il materiale per un corso di fisica per le scuole secondarie superiori che facesse conoscere agli studenti le idee fondamentali della fisica moderna e desse loro quel tanto di conoscenze fisiche che è da ritenersi indispensabile nella cultura di un uomo d'oggi. Ovviamente si supponeva che, dopo le grandi conquiste delle scienze fisiche negli ultimi cento anni, l'insegnamento della fisica nelle scuole secondarie dovesse cambiare in modo altrettanto profondo. Il Corso di Fisica P.S.S.C. è opera collettiva cui ha partecipato un grandissimo numero di persone. Il lavoro è cominciato nell'autunno del 1956, con un progetto steso da un Comitato promotore. Il progetto è stato sviluppato nella estate 1957 da un gruppo di circa 60 fisici, insegnanti, progettisti di apparecchi, scrittori, artisti e altri specialisti. Al lavoro di realizzazione finale del corso hanno preso parte complessivamente 295 persone, tra cui numerosi premi Nobel di fisica, docenti di diverse Università americane, soprattutto del Massachusetts Institute of Technology e dell'University of Illinois, scrittori (come Arthur Koestler, nome noto anche al pubblico italiano), industriali ed esperti di cinema (tra cui il regista Frank Capra). Il risultato di tutto questo lavoro è il complesso del materiale didattico costituito da: un libro di testo di 656 pagine una guida alle esperienze di laboratorio per gli studenti, opuscolo illustrato di 87 pagine una guida per gli insegnanti, di più di 1000 pagine una serie di film didattici, preparati per illustrare particolari argomenti del corso, di cui circa 40 sono stati preparati e altri seguiranno una collana di monografie che approfondiscono singoli argomenti della fisica, presentate in forma di libretti rilegati in brossura a poco costo una scatola di apparecchiature per eseguire gli esperimenti suggeriti nel corso una serie di prove d'esame studiate con la collaborazione di psicologi e pedagogisti per saggiare i risultati finali del corso. Il libro di testo è stata pubblicato in un prima forma sperimentale nell'anno scolastico 1957-58. È stato sottoposto a un collaudo per 3 anni, nel corso dei quali è stato adoperato da 38.000 studenti. Una organizzazione appositamente predisposta ha raccolto tutte le critiche e i suggerimenti degli insegnanti e degli studenti e in base a questi ha modificato profondamente il testo portandolo alla sua forma definitiva, pubblicata nel 1960. Il libro si presenta come un testo completamente nuovo, ricco di disegni e fotografie eseguite tutte appositamente per questa occasione facendo uso di ogni artifizio tecnico disponibile nei laboratori moderni. Le caratteristiche fondamentali che lo differenziano dai testi tradizionali sono: - Il chiaro obiettivo di trasmettere agli studenti quello ch'è l'atteggiamento scientifico d'oggi e non quello di 50 anni fa, cui si ispira anche in America la maggioranza dei libri scolastici. - L'ordine dato agli argomenti e lo sviluppo dato alle varie parti rispecchiano quell'obiettivo fondamentale. Certi argomenti insegnati tradizionalmente sono stati sacrificati, perché si è ritenuto che, entro il numero di ore fisso assegnato dai programmi all'insegnamento, argomenti divenuti meno importanti dovessero cedere il posto ad altri nuovi e più attuali. Dopo un capitolo introduttivo ("Che cos'è la fisica?"), la trattazione della materia prende l'avvio dalle principali operazioni di misura, in conformità con i più moderni indirizzi. - Si è data importanza preminente alle idee centrali della fisica moderna, lasciando ad altri corsi lo studio delle loro applicazioni. - Si è ritenuto essenziale che gli studenti imparassero la fisica attraverso esperimenti da loro stessi eseguiti, che non sono soltanto esercizi applicativi, ma parte integrante e fondamentale dell'apprendimento. L'opera è stata già tradotta, o è in corso di traduzione, in numerosi paesi del mondo. La Zanichelli ha presentato la traduzione della prima parte della "Guida del laboratorio di Fisica" sta pubblicando, in fascicoli riservati alle classi pilota che già da quest'anno seguono il programma del corso P.S.S.C., anche il 'libro di testo': testo che sarà poi presentato al pubblico in due volumi, contemporaneamente alla "Guida degli insegnanti". Le classi pilota che hanno adottato in esperimento questo testo sono 20, distribuite in varie città d'Italia, e precisamente: Bari, Bitonto (Bari), Bologna, Firenze, Giovinazzo (Bari), Gorizia, Macerata, Milano, Modena, Monfalcone, Palermo, Piacenza, Pontedera (Pisa), Trani, Trieste. Parlare dei risultati di quest'esperimento sarebbe ancora prematuro: tuttavia, non sono mancate, già ora, testimonianze di un vivissimo interesse degli studenti. (.)"
