Hardback - Summary The Dioptra was written in the year 1095, by a monk named Philippos. Occasionally, the epithet "Monotropos" is used instead as an archaising word meani…ng "monk". Two years after the composition of the Dioptra, a second redaction with changes in language and metric, as well as transpositions of text, appeared. The main body of the Dioptra consists of four books in 7134 "political" verses (or 7217 in the second redaction). These verses take the form of a dialogue between the Soul and the Body, personified as Mistress and Maid respectively. The Mistress poses questions to theological and anthropological issues, which the Maid largely answers by paraphrasing patristic and biblical passages. A catanyctic poem (one focused on contrition or penitence) serves as prologue or epilogue, depending on redaction. This section is addressed to the soul (Klauthmoi/Lamentationes). Moreover, patristic excerpts, which Philippos collected but did not versify, are transmitted as inserts, appendices or marginal scholia. The "political" verse, the fictionality of the personification and the text's sense of humour distinguish the dialogue from the Erotapokriseis. These features, together with the issues discussed and the straightforward language, contributed to the unusual popularity of the Dioptra: 79 Byzantine and Post-Byzantine manuscripts transmitted the Dioptra as a whole, or in excerpts. An additional ten manuscripts contain Greek paraphrases. Die Dioptra wurde im Jahr 1095 von einem Mönch namens Philippos verfasst. Weitere zehn Handschriften überliefern griechischsprachige Paraphrasen. Der vorliegende erste Band umfasst die allgemeine und textkritische Einleitung, begleitet von einer vollständigen Bibliographie, sowie die kritische Edition der Vortexte und der Lamentationes. Der Hauptteil des Textes sowie die Indizes werden in zwei weiteren Bänden veröffentlicht.
