Hardback. Condition: Near Fine. Greek Terracottas (1950) by N.B.L. Pevsner ? King Penguin Books Offered by Crappy Old Books ? proudly selling paper older than your parents. In Greek Terracottas , Pevsner (yes, that Pevsner) trades grand cathedrals for tiny goddesses, miniature satyrs, and clay offerings from the ancient world. F…irst published in 1950 as part of the beautifully illustrated King Penguin series, this pocket-sized gem explores the delicate artistry and cultural context of terracotta figurines in classical Greece ? the everyday art of everyday people. Our copy? Let?s call it ?museum-grade shabby.? The colour plates are still vivid, though the spine may be living its final days. Perfect for classicists, design lovers, or anyone who likes their archaeology with a whiff of attic dust. Crappy Old Books ? where battered books live forever. Hardbak in good condition. Dust jacket is plastic wrapped.

The inaugural lecture delivered at Birbeck College on May 23, 1960 by Nikolaus Pevsner, a German-British historian best known for his 46-volume series, The Buildings of England (1951-1974). In his lecture, Pevsner discusses the architectural planning of Elizabethan houses that includes 38 figures and 16 black & white photographs…. This may have been Pevsner's copy as his surname is written on the front wrapper and a typed partial letter to him is stapled inside the front wrapper. Typed in 1961 from an unknown figure at Wadham College who begins the letter apologizing for "bothering you with the tedious subject of money" before providing critical feedback on Pevsner's lecture. Unfortunately only one leaf (typed on both sides) is still present, which may have been done intentionally by Pevsner since it was the portion commenting on his lecture. There are some marginal corrections in pen throughout the text. Pevsner was born in Germany to Jewish parents and was forced to flee Germany in 1933 during the Nazi rise to power. Controversially, according to his biographer Stephen Games, Pevsner was initially supportive of the Nazi movement and especially Goebbels' attempt to preserve only "pure" non-decadent German art. After settling in Britain, he was interned briefly during WWII, but went on to have a distinguished academic career. Stapled wrappers, 24 pp., illustrated. Slight edge wear to wrappers, a very good copy.
