Le 20 février 1909, le poète italien Marinetti publiait à la une du Figaro le Manifeste du futurisme, il y célébrait le nouvel âge des foules, la beauté de la machine, le dynamisme, la vitesse, le mépris du passé. Un an plus tard, Balla, Boccioni, Carrà, Russolo, Severini signaient un nouveau manifeste qui dotait le futurisme d'une composante picturale. Fiers et belliqueux, les peintres italiens ambitionnaient d'imposer leur peinture à Paris, d'y supplanter un cubisme qu'ils suspectaient de conservatisme. Des débats parisiens émergeait bientôt une troisième voie une associant le formalisme cubiste et la modernité futuriste. En France, Duchamp peignait son Nu descendant l'escalier, Picabia Udnie; en Russie, Malévitch brandissait l'étendard du " cubofuturisme a; en Angleterre, Lewis fédérait les jeunes peintres "rebelles" autour du vorticisme; au Salon des indépendants de 1913, Apollinaire saluait l'avènement d'une nouvelle école picturale, l'orphisme. Par une iconographie abondamment commentée, chaque ?uvre faisant l'objet d'une notice, le présent catalogue instruit le dossier du fantastique bouillonnement artistique qui anima les années précédant la Première Guerre mondiale.
