Dark green cloth binding, pictorial front board with black, red and blue detail, patterned spine, black detail with gilt label. A little marking and scuffing to binding but quite clean and colouring still vivid. Signs of wear, a little rubbing at edges and on hinges. Book has slight forward tilt. Slight slackness to binding but book contents reasonably firm. Page edges browned, scuffed and slightly marked. Some marking to endpapers, Salvation Army prize-giving bookplate to front pastedown. A little marking and slight foxing to some page surfaces but otherwise clean, no underlining, marginalia, etc. See pictures for further information. Circa 1911. n.

Slim 4to, unpaginated pp12 with leaves printed on one side only and mounted on linen with six chromolithographic plates from coloured designs by H. W. Petherick in very good condition. Pictorial soft cover covers detached but present with some rubbing to edges and spine. Inside some toning and a little sporadic foxing to text pages. A nice early edition.

Book is divided into 5 chapters: Daily Life Among the Great, A Poor Dependant, The Dame Anoblie, Flotsam and Jetsam, Art and Artists in the Eighteenth Century. 403 pp. plus 4 pp of Frederick Warne advertising. Red cloth boards are ornately decorated on front and spine. Back board blindstamped with Warne colophon. Front features inset picture of indoor scene with couple in front of fireplace with gilt fire and with candlestick with gilt flame on mantle. Spine and rest of front board around inset shows wetland scene with two gilt heron type birds, one on the wing and one in the rushes. Gilt has kept its brightness. Fore edge has concave cut, top edge dyed. Book is cocked to the right, extremities are bumped and scuffed. Spine is beginning in interior of text block, but there are no loose pages. Whitish stain on Warne logo at base of spine. A beautiful and quite rare antiquarian book. Bookseller's Inventory # 090165.
