Hine (1874?1940) hat mit seinen Fotografien wie kein anderer unser Bildgedächtnis von der amerikanischen Arbeitswelt des frühen zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts geprägt. Als ethisch motiviert…er Sozialreformer wollte Hine, der vornehmlich als Auftragsfotograf für karitative, kommunale und regierungsamtliche Organisationen tätig war, das Los der unterprivilegierten Klassen öffentlich machen. Seine Aufnahmen von Stahlarbeitern in Pittsburgh, von der Kinderarbeit in Baumwollspinnereien, in Fabriken, Kohleminen und auf den Feldern, von Zeitungs- und Botenjungen, ihr Alter je nach Tätigkeit ab ca. vier Jahre, aber auch seine Bilder von Einwanderern auf Ellis Island und vom Bau des Empire State Building trugen massgeblich mit dazu bei, das amerikanische Bürgertum über die soziale Wirklichkeit im Land aufzuklären. In seinen späteren Arbeiten änderte Hine seine Darstellungsweise und zeigte den Arbeiter nicht mehr als Opfer eines Ausbeutungsverhältnisses, sondern inszenierte ihn in der Art des sozialistischen Realismus als kräftigen, freundlichen und mutigen, vor allem aber unpolitischen Helden des Alltags. Hine selbst verstarb 1940 in bitterer Armut.Lewis W. Hine wird in diesem Band mit einer repräsentativen Auswahl vorgestellt, die Aufnahmen aus allen Tätigkeitsfeldern und Perioden seines Schaffens zeigt.
