It opens with an introduction, a biographical sketch of Lamb and a list of his published writings. Part I covers the structure of language. It starts with cognitive and stratificational theory: valence and phraseology, a neural network model of language production, neurological evidence for an autonomous lexicon, and the Welsh sentence particle. Related functional frameworks follow, among them chart parsing, textlinguistics, motion schemata and consonant iconicity. The part ends with descriptive studies of the English noun phrase, conversation and translation, plus an essay that places Lamb's conceptual level within grammar.
