Der heutige Rooseveltplatz hatte fruher verschiedene Bezeichnungen, darunter Maximilianplatz und Hermann-Goring-Platz. Dieses Buch erinnert an die verschwundenen Strassenna…men Wiens. Wahrend einige Namen, wie Adolf-Hitler-Platz oder Stalinplatz, aus gutem Grund verschwanden, gerieten andere in Vergessenheit oder wurden mehrfach umbenannt. Es gibt auch fragwurdige Nichtexistenzen, wie den Friedplatz, der einst an den Pazifisten Erich Fried erinnerte. Strassennamen haben oft eine politische Dimension, die seit der Revolution von 1848 sichtbar wird. Ein eigenes Kapitel widmet sich den verschwundenen Namen dieser Zeit sowie der Besatzungszeit (1945-1955), als die Sowjets einige Umbenennungen durchsetzten. Politische Zasuren wie 1918, 1934, 1938 und 1945 verdeutlichen den politischen Gehalt von Verkehrsflachen. Mit dem Ende der Monarchie verschwanden viele monarchische Namen, wahrend das Rote Wien neue Akzente setzte. Nach dem Burgerkrieg 1934 entfernte das autoritare Regime zahlreiche Namen, die an Sozialdemokraten erinnerten, und auch die Nationalsozialisten fuhrten nach 1938 neue Benennungen ein. Ein weiteres Kapitel ist den zu Recht verschwundenen Namen gewidmet.
