Baron Charles Heurteloup, who outclassed Leroy in his contentiousness, practiced in London before settling in Paris" (Murphy, History of Urology, pp. 173 and 176). The large folding plate illustrates the instruments for the operation; in the legend to the plate, Heurteloup concludes his Lettre: "Si vous voulez embarrasser M. Civiale, demandez-lui de faire manoeuver ces derniers en votre présence" (p. 104). See item 112 for the monograph by Civiale that Heurteloup criticizes here. See Garrison-Morton 4290 for Heurteloup's 1833 monograph on lithotripsy ("the discovery of the principle of the modern lithotrite" [Murphy, p. 172]). Ségalas is credited with the invention of a urethro-cystic speculum (1827) [Garrison-Morton 4165.1], but in his Lettre Heurteloup contests Ségalas's priority: "Knowing that I had lodged with the Secretariat of the Institute drawings of an apparatus for viewing the inside of the bladder by means of lampyres, commonly called glow-worms, M. Ségalas hastily constructed a reflecting apparatus, which he presented to the Académie as being suitable for this purpose, but without admitting that I was the originator of the idea" (quoted in Murphy, p.181).

Bonapartiste de la première heure, Jean-Gilbert Victor Fialin, duc de Persigny (1808-1872) était déjà aux côtés du fu…tur Napoléon III lors des deux tentatives d'insurrection de Strasbourg (1836) et Boulogne (1840) et contribua puissamment à l'élection du Louis Napoléon puis au coup d'Etat du 2 décembre 1852. Il occupa par la suite d'importantes fonctions ministérielles sous le Second Empire. Il rédigea ces 'Lettres de Londres' depuis son exil pour fuir la justice française de 1836 à 1839. L'auteur traite, dans cette oeuvre de propagande bonapartiste, de ses relations avec le futur empereur, des projets de restauration du régime impérial et livre un début du programme du gouvernement à venir. Ex-libris gravé de la bibliothèque de Léon Laurent-Pichat (1823-1886), homme politique, poète et homme de lettres, connu principalement pour le rôle qu'il a joué dans la publication de 'Madame Bovary' en 1857. Joli exemplaire, très bien relié en maroquin de l'époque.
