La imagen fue traída de España por el soldado Juan Rodríguez de Villafuerte, quien acompañó a Hernán Cortés en su viaje de conquista. Después de muchos sacrificios, Cortés y su pequeño ejército arribaron a la gran Tenochtitlán. Ahí fueron cordialmente recibidos por Moctezuma. Muerto este y teniendo que ir Cortés a Veracruz a enfrentar a Pánfilo de Narváez los mexicas se rebelaron contra los españoles y entre el 30 de junio y el 1 de julio de 1520, en la que se conoce como Noche Triste, fueron forzados a salir hacia el oeste de la ciudad, por el camino de Tacuba.Durante esa retirada, abandonaron todo lo necesario para facilitar la salida y por ese motivo la pequeña imagen fue escondida bajo un maguey.
