Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Irving Penn, A Photographic Essay by (illustrator). Jacket (coded 0578, and still showing original $18.95 price) rear panel shows the SBN 670-40067-x, though copyright page is updated to ISBN 0-670-40067-X. In this 10-1/2-inch square jacketed hardcover quarto, fashion photographer Irving Penn uses some creative chiarascuro lighting to photograph in black-and white the Paris fashions selected by Paris-born Diana Vreeland for the Metropolitan Museum's 1970s historical fashion show "The 10s, 20s, 30s" (though unfortunately all clothing is displayed on mannequins -- no live models.) Book and jacket are "good" -- complete and intact, though considerably loosened from use, jacket frayed to head & heel of spine. Text is by Diana Vreeland, former fashion editor of Harper's Bazaar and editor-in-chief of Vogue, the magazine which featured Jill Biden, Kamala Harris, Hillary Clinton and heavyweight Michelle Obama (who has been described online as having "a face like a moose's butt") -- but never Laura Bush or former high fashion model Melania Trump (after her husband Donald Trump entered politics as a Republican, anyway) on its cover, since editors there explain the Democrat cows (including homewrecker Harris and New Zealand's gun-grabbing Socialist Jacinds Ardern, who had people arrested for sneaking across town in the evening to buy Kentucky Fried Chicken) are "inspring icons," whereas Republican women are not. 96 pp.

First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 164 pages. Published in 1983. Scarce Italo Calvino collectible item. The August 1983 Issue. Features the Italian author on the Cover of Vanity Fair Magazine. This is the first of five consecutive Issues in 1983 that featured great living writers on the cover: Italo Calvino (August); Philip Roth (September); Susan Sontag (October); Francine du Plessix Gray (November); and Woody Allen (December). Vanity Fair commissioned the late great Irving Penn to photograph all of them, and all five portraits, taken in extreme close-ups, are among the photographer's finest work. Pictorial softcovers, as issued. Contributions by various writers, journalists, photographers, and columnists. Printed on thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Unlike most books, magazines are still printed in the United States, with stunning results. Encased in its own protective plastic sleeve. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Italo Calvino on the cover of Vanity Fair Magazine. The occasion is the appearance of "The Adventure of A Photographer: A Story" in English translation and in the United States. The Issue also includes some of the very best essays, feature articles, and fiction that Vanity Fair Magazine has ever published, making it a "keepsake" rather than a "throwaway". Plus, the rare appearance of a beloved author on the cover of a mainstream, mass-circulation magazine is an experience that readers will not be privileged to have ever again. Italo Calvino died two years later on September 19, 1985. An absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, Issue for Italo Calvino and Vanity Fair collectors. This Issue is now collectible. This is one of few copies still available online, is encased in its own protective plastic sleeve, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A scarce copy thus. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ITALO CALVINO AND VANITY FAIR MAGAZINE TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). no.
