Illustrations on steel and wood. Story about Colonel Thomas Newcome and his son Clive. Their travels to India and Europe and romance. Set a decade or two after 'Vanitiy Fair'. It's greatest strength are the myriad references to popular and educational culture of the Victorian era through mention of poets, painters, novelists, politics, people, general events. Dotted with Latin, French, Italian, Ancient Greek phrases. Condition: Boards are in rough condition, need some renovating! Cracked, tears, binding showing, scraped and loss of colour. Harsh wear on spine leather pieces missing, boards showing on corners. Internally age spotting on e/ps. Some pages age discolouring on edges, but compared to the covers not bad condition. Text clear, very readable. illusts age discolouring but visiable. Given age at least they are still here. Fair condition overall.

The book is actually authored by William Makepeace Thackeray, with Pendennis a character from his earlier novel of the same name. The Newcombes references characters in his classic novel, Vanity Fair. The novel was originally serialised over a 2 year period previously. Published by Bradbury and Evans, London, 1854 & 1855. 2 Volumes complete. Fist edition thus. A good set of 2 hardbacks with leather spines and corners and marbled paper over boards. Raised bands and gilt to spine. Both volumes have damage to the title labels on the spine. Covers worn, rubbed and bumped. Previous owner's signature to first pastedown. Title pages and facing pages are heavily foxed due to lack of tissue guards. Endpapers cracked at inner joints on Volume 1. All soundly bound. Text is good throughout with some light spotting, but plates are foxed, affecting the page surrounding them. An uncommon set. Vol 1: 380pp. Plus plates. Vol 2: 375pp. Plus plates. Dimensions: Each volume approximately 222mm high x 147mm wide x 32mm deep. Weight approximately 1.45kg unpacked (the set). Extra postage may be payable. More photos on request.

    Half-Calf. Condition: Very Good. Richard "Dicky" Doyle. (illustrator). 1st Edition. 1st edition. 2 volume set. viii + 380 pages + 23 steel engraved plates and an engraved title and printed title page to volume 1 with printed title dated 185 AND volume 2 dated 1855 consisting of viii + 375 pages + 23 plates and an engraved title and printed title in. Both volumes also have many woodcut vignettes and head pieces. Condition: There is a thin/fine brown mark to the gutters of the engraved plates in volume 2 which seems to have been from binding from the parts and the removal of the paper covers. Several plates have a light atmospheric stain with one plate affected slightly, affecting the odd plate only and edges, a light offsetting at title pages, volume one the edges of part of the book are slightly age toned, marbled page edges and marbled endpapers all matching. Some rubbing to edges of the leather and corners. A clean tight set, no inscriptions. The etched plates are delightful and done by Arthur Conan Doyle's grandfather Richard Doyle. Octavo. 1854-55.
