Hardcover. Condition: Very Good condition. Dust Jacket Condition: No dust jacket, as issued. First Edition. Washington D. C: US Government Printing Office, 1973. INSCRIBED / SIGNED / DATED (1/28/74) by Rhode Island Senator Claiborne Pell. Also INSCRIBED / SIGNED by Ray Nelson, Pell's top staffer. Laid-in is the Winter, 1974 newsletter from Senator Pell to his constituents. It discusses the 8.1% inflation rate under President Nixon, Nixon's Watergate troubles and possible impeachment, the confirmation of Gerald Ford as the new Vice President (the hearings for which Pell attended as ranking Democrat on the Rules Committee), etc. Also laid-in is a green $3 bill, with Richard Nixon's image, imprinted "The Untidy States of America" and "This note is not worth the paper it is printed on." Ray Nelson's signature may be of interest because he managed Pell's first Senate campaign in 1960. After rising to bureau chief at The Providence Journal, Nelson was tapped to join Pell's staff where he was quite influential, including his advocacy (despite not being college educated) for Federally funded college aid, later known as "The Pell Grants." In 1976 Nelson openly declared himself a gay man. Nelson was found murdered in 1981, apparently bludgeoned to death by an office typewriter. The murder remains unsolved. The book includes biographical information about and tributes to Harry S. Truman, America's 33rd President, from most of the movers and shakers in Congress at the time (and since) - Baker, Bayh, Biden, Byrd, Dole, Ervin, Fulbright, Goldwater, Humphrey, Kennedy, Mansfield, Mondale, Nunn, Pell, Adlai Stevenson, Strom Thurmond, etc. Bound in the original black cloth, stamped in bright gold. INSCRIBED / SIGNED by Senator Claiborne Pell. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good condition/No dust jacket, as issued. Illus. by NOT a library discard. xxxv, 196pp. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping. NOT a library discard (illustrator).
