The Mountaineers was organized in 1906 to explore and study the mountains, forests and watercourses of Northwest United States and to gather in a permanent form the history and traditions of the region. This book had its beginning in 1934 with organization of the Climbing Course, a school presented annually. Outlines prepared by Course lecturers were given to students and eventually published in 1948 as The Mountaineers Handbook. By 1955 tools and techniques had changed so drastically that 1960 the first edition was published. and a second edition released in 1967. Not only does this book reflect the history and evolution of United States mountaineering techniques but it is still a valid Course text book, which of course was its major purpose in the beginning.
