Hard Back. Condition: Very Good. Third Edition Third Printing. 478 Pages Indexed. Ex Libris and owner's name stamp on front endpapers. Pictorial wraparound boards with white lettering on the green spine and cover. Very minor cover edge wear. Illustrated with drawings and tables on almost all pages plus 19 black and white photogr…aph plates. The Mountaineers was organized in 1906 to explore and study the mountains, forests and watercourses of Northwest United States and to gather in a permanent form the history and traditions of the region. This book had its beginning in 1934 with organization of the Climbing Course, a school presented annually. Outlines prepared by Course lecturers were given to students and eventually published in 1948 as The Mountaineers Handbook. By 1955 tools and techniques had changed so drastically that 1960 the first edition was published. and a second edition released in 1967. This third edition was released in 1974 and went through several printings. Not only does this book reflect the history and evolution of United States mountaineering techniques but it is still a valid Course text book, which of course was its major purpose in the beginning. Contents in Six Parts: Approaching the Peaks, Climbing Fundamentals, Rock Climbing, Snow and Ice Climbing, Safe Climbing, and The Climbing Environment. A book from the Jack McK. Pardee Collection. A book from the Jack McK. Pardee Collection. Mr. Pardee was a collector of Americana who focused on frontier and natural history, hunting, wildlife, and firearms and is noted not only for his book selections but for his careful handling and storage. Most of his collection had faultless interior pages. E-mail for more information regarding the Pardee collection. Cram, Robert; Hammerly, Ramona (illustrator).
