Lender's stamps and markings on front endpapers and early front prelims; pages ageing, volume shaken. Otherwise, internally neat, clean, barring some staining on pages 21/22.

Reverend William Ellis (17941872) was a London Missionary Society representative who captured some of the earliest, most significant photographs of Madagascar during three visits between 1853 and 1865. Trained by photographer Roger Fenton, Ellis used photography to document the Malagasy people and support missionary efforts. His work, including portraits of the Royal court and landscapes, is highly valued historically (Source: Taylor & Francis) This bilingual (English/Malagasy) book was produced to accompany an exhibition of early photographs of Madagascar taken by William Ellis. They are thought to be the first photographic images of the country, dating back as far as 1853.
