[Bilingual Edition: English - Malagasy]. Oblong Quarto (24.6 cm wide x 21.5 cm high). 70 pages with illustrations throughout. Softcover / Original, illustrated softcover. Excellent condition with only minor signs of wear. Signed / Inscribed on the titlepage by author Simon Peers. Extremely Rare !! Reverend William Ellis (17941872) was a London Missionary Society representative who captured some of the earliest, most significant photographs of Madagascar during three visits between 1853 and 1865. Trained by photographer Roger Fenton, Ellis used photography to document the Malagasy people and support missionary efforts. His work, including portraits of the Royal court and landscapes, is highly valued historically (Source: Taylor & Francis) This bilingual (English/Malagasy) book was produced to accompany an exhibition of early photographs of Madagascar taken by William Ellis. They are thought to be the first photographic images of the country, dating back as far as 1853. Details of all 62 photographs in the exhibition are given, and 29 of the images are reproduced in the book.
