Unfortunately, 4 scriptural emblems…are missing (the pages with emblems that are missing are: 29/30, 37/38, 47/48 & 59/60). # Landwehr, Emblem and fable books, p. 57, nr. 63; Praz, Studies, p. 275. - Pedro de Bivero (Madrid, 1572-1655) was a Spanish Jesuit, rhetorician, and Latin writer. He was a professor of rhetoric, philosophy, and theology and rector of the College of the Society of Jesus in Madrid. -- The work offered here, published in Antwerp (1634) by Balthasar Moretus, is an atypical Latin emblem book, essentially pious. The title declares it a "new art of living well and dying well," using "sacred, pious images, depicted and illustrated in emblems." He organizes his work into three parts: the first is devoted to the Immaculate Virgin Mary, with six figures and their commentaries. The second is devoted to the "Novus David" (the New David, that is, Christ), with 20 figures. The third deals with the "Sacrae Eycharistiae usu et cultu" (Use and Adoration of the Holy Eucharist), also with six figures and extensive commentaries. Several appendices have been added, such as "Ad Cor Novi Davidis"(To the Heart of the New David) with 15 images and their respective explanations. The engravings almost always refer to biblical scenes (Paradise, Original Sin, etc.). At the top, they are preceded by two lines resembling a motto, and at the bottom by two more lines resembling an epigram. However, neither the motto nor the epigram are part of a typical emblem book. The plates of part 3 derive from "Typus praedestinationis" (Antwerpen, Aertssens, 1630).

Some of the engravings are signed in the plate DF (or B.F.). The engravings were used to illustrated the ''Sacrum orato…rium.'' by Bivero. This book appeared in Antwerpen in 1634 (B. Moretus). In all it contained 57 illustrations (divided over its 4 parts). The engraver nor designer has been identified. According 'De Backer-Sommervogel'' vol. I col.1526 the Plantin museum has 9 drawings by Adam van Noort pertaining to this edition. The curious thing about this suite is that most of the engravings are in mirrored view compared with the book illustrations. The engravings are correctly bound in the same order as they appear in the book : the second part (from pp. 190 till pp 440 (one missing - pp 425-426). The fact that the binder observed the book order leads to the supposition that the suite was composed nearly contemporary with the book. Rare and enigmatic emblematical suite. (The engravings are of the highest quality, some of them are more detailed that the book illustrations !).
