Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo. xv[3]1-234[4]p. Illustrated with 32 black and white captioned photos. Appendix: Climbs and Attempted Climbs of Mt. McKindley (pp. 223-234). Endpapers are maps. Laid in are two items: a newspaper clipping book review of this book (newspaper and date unknown) and a short biographical sketch hand dated 1978 (source unknown). Blue paper over black paper, both made to look like cloth and covering the boards and spine; gilt letters on the spine and a vignette in gilt on the front cover of two caribou. Some wear to extremities, with a couple of corners just barely rubbed through, top and bottom of spine just beginning to fray, covers clean and bright, gilt bright, small ding to leading edge of front cover, previous owner's name and date at top of title page (Robert N. McIntyre, Sept 1963--Omaha), all photos in fine condition, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. Dust jacket slightly tattered and repaired with Scotch tape, but not price-clipped. Born in Litchfield, Minnesota, Grant Pearson (1900-1978) spent 25 years in Mt. McKinley (Denali) National Park serving as permanent Ranger, Chief Ranger, and finally Superintendent. In 1932, Pearson joined the Lindley-Liek mountain-climbing expedition, the first to scale both south and north peaks of Mt. McKinley (Denali). He also served as a Ranger in Sitka and Glacier Bay National Monument. In 1974, Pearson was awarded the U.S. Army Medal of Freedom for leading an expedition to rescue Army personnel from Mt. McKinley (Denali). After his retirement, when Alaska became a state in 1958, Pearson became the first Repesentative to the Sate Legislature from the 5th Assembly District (1958-1964), which included Mt. McKinley (Denali) National Park. He lived in Nenana until his death and his ashes were scattered on Mt. McKinley (Denali). This book is more than a biography of a very influential Park Ranger; it is chock full of firsthand information about life in Alaska's mountain ranges, including his own experiences in mountaineering and working to protect the magnificent country that is now Denali National Park and Preserve. A "must have" for anyone interested in Mt. McKinley (Denali) National Park.
