Memoirs of the author's missionary work among the "nature-peoples" known as the "red Indians" of North America, specifically, the Cree & Salteaux peoples In 267 pages, lavishly illustrated throughout with steel engravings + a Frontispiece of the author, with an Intro…duction to the American Edition by J. T. Gracey, + a general Introduction by Mark Guy Pearse. No date in book, but the Gracey intro is dated 1890 & this has all the signs of being the First American Edition. Small octavo (5.25" x 7.5") has olive green cloth over boards lettered in black to front & spine, with a duotone front paper pastedown depicting a dog sled. Condition is Good: an Ex-Lib copy, with card pocket & usual stamps & marking in front matter, call number to lower exterior spine. Generally quite clean, binding strong with slight cocking. Pages creamy white with moderate tanning, unmarked. Frontispiece is partially detached. Exterior shows modest rubbing to extremities, heavier at corners, with corner bumping & pushing to both ends of spine; heavier rubbing to rear board. List of Illustrations in the f…ront. Pages are very clean and intact except for minuscule age toning and occasional, small marks. Covers have a few stray marks, slightly bumped corners, and slight wear to the edges. Some splitting along front and back inner hinges. The binding feels a bit loose, but it is holding. A Very Good copy. The first book written by Egerton Ryerson Young (1840-1909), a Canadian Methodist missionary and author. Emphasis is on mission work in Canada to evangelize Indigenous people, but Young also writes about the customs and cultures of the Cree and Saulteaux (Ojibwe) tribes, local scenery in the wilderness, and his various travels in Canada. Mark Guy Pearse (1842-1930) was a Cornish Methodist preacher and author. He was very well-known in his time and wrote a number of devotional books. In 1887, the two actually met in Meaford, Ontario, where Pearse was captivated by Young's stories about his mission work and encouraged Young to write about them.
