Pearl Binder (1904-1990), later Baroness Elwyn-Jones, was a British writer, i…llustrator, lithographer, stained-glass artist, sculptor, and lifelong champion of the Pearly Kings and Queens of London's East End. Her other books include The Peacock's Tail, Dressing Up, Dressing Down, Magic Symbols of the World, and The Pearlies: A Social Record. She both wrote and illustrated Muffs and Morals, a combination that gives the book a particularly unified character. Muffs and Morals was published by George G. Harrap and Co. of London in 1953, with an American edition issued by William Morrow. It runs to 256 pages and is illustrated throughout with eleven half-tone plates and eighty-three line drawings by the author. The binding is found in both pink and purple cloth, with gilt lettering to the spine. The American Morrow edition is undated. The book is described on its dust jacket as a frank and stimulating account of dress and fashion — male and female, military and civilian — in relation to moral standards and social developments from ancient Egypt to present-day Korea. The argument running through the book is that clothing has never been merely practical or aesthetic but has always functioned as a register of social anxiety, moral aspiration, and the exercise of power — that what people wear and what they are permitted to wear tells us as much about a society's values and hierarchies as any other form of evidence. Binder pursues this thesis across a wide chronological range and a deliberately eclectic selection of subjects. The chapter list gives a fair sense of the breadth and tone: Decency and Indecency in Dress; Male Coquetry; The Dress and the Job; Beards and Moustaches; Cosmetics and Patches; Hairdressing and Wigs; Foundations and Underwear; Jewellery and Clothes; Sumptuary Laws: Extremes and Encroachments; Umbrellas, Walking-sticks and Fans; Children and Their Clothes; Who Sets the Fashion?; and The Influence of the East. The chapter on beards draws on the full range of Victorian pogonophilia, including a letter by Charles Dickens eulogising his own beard with what one reviewer described as an ardour more appropriate to a romantic attachment. The chapter on sumptuary laws examines the long history of legislative attempts to enforce social distinctions through dress — the regulation of who might wear silk, fur, or particular colours — and the consistent failure of those attempts in the face of human vanity and aspiration. The Spectator, reviewing the first edition, described it as a richly amusing book whose study of the interrelation of dress and decency had an intriguing relevance quite apart from its excellent entertainment value. The tone throughout is sharp, witty, and unsentimental — the work of someone who takes her subject seriously without taking herself too seriously, and whose illustrations carry their own dry commentary on the text they accompany.
