Original Wraps. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket, as Issued. First Edition. A first printing of the true first UK edition, published as a paperback original - Penguin Cat. No. 2490. An anthology of Latin American authors, including an early publication of a short story (The Day after Saturday) by Gabriel García Márquez, predating… his first published novel in English (One Hundred Years of Solitude) by three years. ***Very good in colour-illustrated card covers. The covers have some marks and creasing commensurate with age and handling, but are actually remarkably clean. There is some light rubbing to the edges, but no serious creases or tears. The spine has a light vertical reading crease but is square and tight. The covers, including the spine, show some browning and fading (please see scans). Internally also very good with a previous owner's name in red biro on the half-title page, but no other inscriptions or annotations. No tears or creases. Internally the pages are clean, although the paper has tanned over the decades. ***267 pages including a section of Biographical Notes on Authors, plus two pages of other titles, at the back of the book. 198mm x 130mm. ***'The unity of Latin America is only one of name. "Latin American Writing Today", with its translations of recent prose and poetry in Spanish and Portuguese, is evidence of the social and literary differences between the countries it covers - Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Cuba, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay.' (Quote taken from the back cover) ***A first printing of the true first UK edition, published as a paperback original in 1967. Uncommon anthology of Latin American authors - some more well-known to UK readers than others. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. John Sewell (Cover design) (illustrator).

'The poetry of modern Mexico is not entirely unknown in this country: Samuel Beckett was so impressed by it that he translated an earlier anthology, and the poems of the greatest contemporary Mexican poet, Octavio Paz, have long been admired here. The present anthology, with the poems chosen by Paz himself, will show how rich the whole scene is. In sensuous detail, strangeness and violence of metaphor, aptness of image and variation of tone, these poems make a strong and immediate impression, and demonstrate a wealth of literary activity which can now be properly appreciated in the English-speaking world. The translations, which have been edited by Mark Strand, were specially made for this volume by a distinguished team of poets, including Paul Blackburn, Donald Justice and W. S. Merwin. They communicate with extraordinary precision the passion and energy of the original texts, which are printed on the facing pages. New Poetry of Mexico is an exciting collection which gives us new insights, not only into another culture, but into the nature of poetry itself.' (Quote from inside front of dustwrapper blurb). ***First impression of the first UK edition in its original dustwrapper, in nice collectable condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
