Sein Start in dieses Leben ist mehr als bescheiden: 1942 in Ammendorf bei Halle an der Saale in die Wirren des Krieges hineingeboren, erkrankt er unterernährt an einer schweren Ra…chitis. Die ersten drei Jahre verbringt er in der Klinik. »Hatte sich in dieser Zeit mein Instinkt fürs Überleben und Durchlavieren gebildet « Möglicherweise. Bereits mit sechs Jahren sorgt er für genügend Heizmaterial im Winter, indem er von mit Kohle beladenen Eisenbahnwaggons die Briketts klaut. 14-jährig beginnt er eine Maurerlehre, arbeitet in dem Knochenjob und lässt sich nebenbei als Säuglings- und Krankenpfleger ausbilden. Hier lernt er seine künftige Frau Helga kennen, die fortan an seiner Seite sein wird. Mit Anfang 20 bekommt Puppe das Angebot, als Zivilangestellter bei der NVA in der Lagerverwaltung und Buchhaltung zu arbeiten. Er, der sich mit Fluchtgedanken aus der DDR trägt, hat Skrupel - und nimmt dennoch an, denn solange er jene Stelle ausübe, müsse er keinen Wehrdienst ableisten. Sein Leben scheint eine ungeahnte Wende genommen zu haben - bis ihm im Zuge der Niederschlagung des Prager Frühlings 1968 klar wird: Auch als Mitläufer wird man schuldig. Der 27-Jährige kündigt seine zivile Stelle bei den Streitkräften der DDR und bewirbt sich um einen Job als Leiter der inneren Verwaltung bei der Zweigstellendirektion des Volksbuchhandels in Halle. Fünf Jahre später drückt er im Abendstudium die Schulbank, um Buchhändler zu werden, und 1975 ist er bereits Verlagsbeauftragter des VEB Bibliographisches Institut Leipzig. Er hat es geschafft, fährt einen Dienstwagen und verdient für DDR-Verhältnisse gutes Geld. Und dennoch hadert er mit dem Staat, in dem er lebt. 1977 avanciert er zum NSW-Reisekader des Verlags, mit anderen Worten: Er darf als Handelsbeauftragter in den Westen reisen. Noch im selben Jahr kehrt er von einer Dienstreise in die BRD nicht mehr zurück in die DDR. Es ist eine Flucht, die einem Krimi gleicht. Zäh kämpft er um die Familienzusammenführung, holt Frau und Sohn zu sich und fasst abermals in der Verlagsbranche Fuß. Er wundert sich, wie viel ihm gelingt. 1992, er ist 50 Jahre alt, liest er in einem Branchenblatt, dass ein neuer Pächter für die Bahnhofsbuchhandlung in Starnberg gesucht wird. Er rechnet sich keine Chancen aus, bewirbt sich dennoch - und bekommt den Zuschlag. Paul Puppe ist nun ganz oben angekommen, seine Buchhandlung wird zum Hotspot der Prominenz, sie alle kommen zu ihm, sie sind begeistert von seinem Angebot und von seiner bescheidenen Art. Der Bahnhofsbuchhändler ist der schillernde Lebensbericht eines nimmermüden Optimisten und ein zeitgeschichtliches Dokument - deutsche Geschichte pur, spannende und unterhaltsame Anekdoten und trotz des Erfolgs keine Heldensaga. Absolut lesenswert. 158 pp. Deutsch.
