Issued without a dust jacket. -- À qui manifeste un ce…rtain intérêt pour la figure de Josué dans le livre qui porte son nom s'offre un conflit d'interprétations sur ce qu'elle représente. En effet, pour certains, le protagoniste du récit a le profil d'un 'autre Moïse', tandis que pour d'autres ce serait plutôt le 'prototype des rois, sosie de Josias en particulier'; pour d'autres enfin il présente le type idéal de successeur, dans son rôle de successeur de Moïse, et un modèle pour les dirigeants d'Israël. Ces thèses ne sont en lice qu'en apparence, car chacune trouve sa pertinence dans ce que nous appelons le 'cadre littéraire de référence', à savoir respectivement Gn-Jos (Hexateuque), Jos-2 R (Histoire deutéronomiste) et Gn-2 R (ou la grande histoire d'Israël). Une question demeure cependant: qui est Josué, le protagoniste du livre éponyme considéré comme cadre littéraire de référence en soi? Notre étude défend la thèse selon laquelle le récit du livre, dans sa logique interne, construit la figure du protagoniste, Josué, comme le 'second' Serviteur de Yhwh, en tandem avec celle du premier, c'est-à-dire Moïse. Ainsi, dès l'incipit s'élabore une dynamique interne au récit qui opère en Jos 1 une transmission du relais: de Jos 1,1, où le premier Serviteur de Yhwh, Moïse, passe à l'arrière-plan, l'auditoire suit la trajectoire de Josué, qui ne recevra le titre de 'Serviteur de Yhwh' qu'à titre posthume en Jos 24,29. Cependant, de nouveaux arguments montrent que le passage du Jourdain (Jos 3-4) fournit au protagoniste l'occasion de révéler aux yeux du peuple sa relation particulière avec Yhwh. Ce seuil manifeste dès lors la fonction de l'espace dans la configuration des deux figures de Serviteur, de part et d'autre du Jourdain: Moïse à l'est et Josué à l'ouest, dans la Terre de la promesse. La prise en charge de cette terre impliquera de la part de Josué l'assomption de plusieurs fonctions: nous en avons identifiées sept. Au terme de cette étude, on s'interroge sur le besoin social et historique à l'origine de cette gémellité Moïse-Josué.
