"We are nearing the end of the period of unrest that marked the end of the Old Kingdom of Egypt, which historians have called the "First Intermediate Period," around 2100 BC. The regional royal officials, who had become hereditary local chiefs, had formed a strongly organized feudal system, which, from the 6th Dynasty onwards, had held certain regions of Egypt in its hands. Like the ancient Memphite kings, they had their courtiers, subordinate officials and artisans, priests and doctors. The provincial capitals had seen the development of aristocratic necropolises around them, whose tombs, decorated and inscribed mastabas or hypogea, contained wooden sarcophagi, sometimes double (nested one inside the other), with walls also covered in texts. These texts, alongside the magical formulas or "chapters" made available to the kings of the Old Kingdom for their protection in the afterlife—and which have been given the name Pyramid Texts—show entirely new developments, the origin of which remains obscure to us. The important centers of dissemination were Heliopolis and the ancient capital Memphis, with its necropolises of Saqqara and Dahshur Lisht, royal residence of the 12th and 13th dynasties; Herakleopolis, capital of the 9th and 10th dynasties, which exerted its influence over Middle Egypt as far as Asyut; and, further south, Thebes, which extended its influence throughout Upper Egypt. Almost all of the preserved texts originate from the west bank of the Nile, from Kom el-Hisn in the north to Aswan at the First Cataract (19 sites in total), with the exception of the four sites of Beni Hasan, El Bercheh, Qau el-Kebir, and Moallah, located on the east bank. Their dates range from the 9th Dynasty (c. 2160 BCE) to the 13th Dynasty (c. 1700 BCE), thus covering the entirety of what is known as the Middle Kingdom, with a particularly significant development during the 12th Dynasty. However, the pyramid of King Aba at Saqqara, dating from the 8th Dynasty, presents the prototype for some of the new texts. Furthermore, some texts, inscribed on papyrus, are thought to date from the end of the Old Kingdom. These papyri, of unknown origin, are particularly interesting in that they were intended to serve as models for the scribes and painters tasked with reproducing them on sarcophagi".…
