Un peintre hollandais du XXe siècle qui a " inventé " des Vermeer si parfaits que si un accident historique ne l'avait contraint à se dénoncer lui-même, certaines de ses oeuvres seraient toujours accrochées aux…cimaises des plus prestigieux musées du monde. Et d'ailleurs est-on certain que tous les Vermeer authentifiés sont réellement des Vermeer ? Et ne peut-on imaginer, comme d'aucuns le pensent toujours, que quelques-uns des faux peints par Van Meegeren sont en fait de vrais tableaux du maître de Delft ? Si une telle ambiguïté demeure possible, c'est qu'il a existé entre les deux peintres, au-delà des siècles, une véritable connivence artis-tique, une étrange alchimie qui a conduit le faussaire à entrer dans le personnage de Vermeer et peut-être même à devenir Vermeer lui-même, le temps de l'élaboration de l'un de ses faux. L'une de ses toiles, Le Christ et la femme adultère, fut achetée très cher par le maréchal Goering, impénitent collectionneur et pilleur d'oeuvres d'art. Après la Libération, lorsque ce tableau fut retrouvé parmi le trésor caché du Feldmarshall, la police hollandaise vint demander des comptes à Van Meegeren, convaincu d'avoir été le vendeur de la toile : le peintre, soupçonné d'avoir dépossédé son pays d'un tableau inestimable au profit de l'ennemi, risquait alors une lourde condamnation pénale. Pour se disculper, Van Meegeren révéla alors que l'oeuvre était en réalité un faux. Mais emporté par son désir fou de reconnaissance, il s'accusa aussi d'avoir peint tous les Vermeer qui avaient mystérieusement surgi au cours des dernières années. Oui, il avait trompé les meilleurs experts et prouvé par l'absurde combien ils étaient faillibles ! Le paradoxe fut qu'il ne fut pas immédiatement cru et qu'il dut exécuter un faux Vermeer sous l'oeil de la police pour convaincre les enquêteurs de sa bonne foi. En un tournemain, Van Meegeren passa donc du statut de traître à son pays à celui de patriote puisqu'il avait berné Goering lui-même et obtenu pour paiement de son faux 200 tableaux de maîtres de la peinture hollandaise.
