Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor. First Edition Thus. New York: E. P. Dutton & Co Inc. 1934. Hardcover. First US edition. Green cloth with black spine lettering/rule, 201 pages, illustrated, index and key partly unopened. "This is the story of the life of Charles II, England's favourite king, of his exile, his triumphant return and the golden years of his reign. We meet the king, attending affairs of state, with ladies at either arm; we go 'wenching' with his courtiers; excitedly follow him, disguised, working in servants' halls up and down the land, and hiding in the famous oak tree. And meet the artless, charming Nell âÂÂ" orange-seller, actress, companion to the famous and mistress to the merry monarch. 'Old Rowley' had a full life, but Dennis Wheatley has missed nothing. He is a master in the art of evoking atmosphere and is at his brilliant best in this fascinating biography." Very good with edge wear, dust soiling to page edges, light toning and minor foxing to endpapers, in poor jacket with a large chip to the lower front panel, chipping to upper front panel and around spine head, and to top corner rear panel, with overall wear, creasing and rubbing. clphE. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First edition. First edition, first impression. 8vo. Original cloth. Dust-jacket, correctly priced 12/6. Arguably Wheatley's most genuinely frightening book, and the connoisseur's choice among his black magic titles: Toby Jugg, an RAF pilot paralysed by a spinal wound, lies helpless in a remote Welsh mansion where, night after night, something vast and spider-like presses at the moonlit window, and nobody believes him, which is of course the design. Paranoia, immobility, inheritance anxiety and creeping Satanic conspiracy, told through Toby's journal with real claustrophobic force; the BBC filmed it loosely in 2006 as The Haunted Airman, with Robert Pattinson suffering photogenically. The wraparound jacket by Frank C. Papé, a great fantasy illustrator famous for his illustrated Cabell editions, here doing nightmare duty, is among the most desirable of all Wheatley wrappers. Minor foxing to extremities of text-block; jacket with a few chips and mostly minor tears with some resultant creasing, but overall very good. Wraparound jacket artwork by Frank C. Papé. (illustrator). Book.…
