Dans la vaste épopée nonnienne, qui compte 48 chants, les chants I et II occupent une place particulière : outre leur rôle d introduction, ils ont une valeur programmatique tant pour la forme du poème que pour son contenu. Le poète y place son Suvre sous la fig…ure emblématique de Protée, prodigieux, multiforme et clairvoyant, comme le serait le poème, tandis que Zeus présente l épisode mythologique dont il va être question : le père des dieux envoie son fils pour réconforter l humanité souffrante. Ce Dionysos bienfaiteur et sauveur des hommes, est en bien des points proche d un autre sauveur et rappelle que Nonnos fut aussi l auteur de la Paraphrase de la Vie de Saint Jean. Les chants I et II, consacrés, après le prologue, à l archéologie du dieu, contiennent l histoire de Cadmos et notamment la grandiose, et parfois burlesque, typhonie. Notre édition des Dionysiaques propose dans le tome I une riche introduction générale, fruit des recherches érudites de Francis Vian. Elle fait le point des connaissances relatives à Nonnos et discute les différentes hypothèses, tant sur les questions de datation que sur le contexte de rédaction, l Alexandrie cultivée du Ve siècle. Une explication théologique aide à mieux comprendre le cycle des réincarnations des trois Dionysos, Zagreus, Bacchos et Iacchos. Le sommaire général est accompagné d une étude de la composition d ensemble du poème ainsi que de la métrique. L histoire de la tradition manuscrite ainsi que la postérité du texte sont relatées en détail. Chaque chant est précédé d une notice qui lui est propre et assorti d un sommaire permettant de circuler aisément dans le texte.
