Importante obra sobre la ESGRIMA ó DESTREZA DE LAS ARMAS, en pequeño formato (9 x 14 cm), reedición madrileña en el año 1659 por JUAN de PAREDES de la primera impresa en el año 1625 también en Madrid por LUIS SANCHEZ. Nuestra edición induce al error, al carecer de frontis i…nterior y dos primeras hojas, y no llevar justificación de obra, año edición.etc, y en su lugar, antiguo poseedor de época ha caligrafiado en página cabecera a modo de frontis: "Filosofía de las Armas, por Dn. Luis de Pacheco año de 1625", título este que se sacó de la cabecera de las distintas páginas de la obra donde se puede leer "Filosofía de las Armas". La obra que ofrecemos, arranca en dicha portadilla caligrafiada y pasa a la página 3 donde figura la Aprobación a la obra de Christóbal de Torres en 31 de Enero de 1625, Aprobación del Doctor Cedillo Díaz en Madrid Febrero 10 de 1625, y a lo largo de estás hojas 3 a 8 dedicatoria del impresor Julian (errata, es Juan) de Paredes, Dézima del Maestro de Armas Don Antonio Yuste Yube, y el prologuillo del autor LUIS PACHECO, a continuación 87 hojas más (174 págs.) con el texto completo de la obra, que incluye el modo fácil y nuevo para examinarse (páginas 1 a 54), a continuación y sin foliación, ADICION A LA FILOSOPHIA de las Armas Las diez y ocho Contradiciones a la común Destreza, por el mismo Autor Año M.DC.LIX (se lee en el frontis del inmpresor, este sí que lo conserva la obra) con portada frontis más 7 hojas (14 págs) con el texto completo, y luego a continuación las restantes hojas 55 a 87 con las Cien Conclusiones, o formas de saber, de la Destreza de las Armas, fundada en ciencia, con su texto completo. El impresor empleó distintos tamaños de letras en los textos, la primera parte con cuidada tipografía para su portátil tamaño, la segunda parte es sencillamente excelente. Atractiva encuadernación en pasta piel española con tejuelo rojo y dorados en el lomo. Guardas decoradas. cantos decorados, si bien se parecia leve guillotina en márgenes, pero con aceptable Buen estado general de conservación. Se aprecia unas raras dedicatorias manuscritas a pluma en castellano antiguo y de aquella época sin duda alguna con nombres ilegibles: por la Gracia de Dios Rey de Castilla deleon de Aragon Amigo -- mio aviendo nombre ilegible, luego otra más abajo con distinta caligrafía, ambas en el reverso de la hoja 8. Falto pues de la portada principal y dos primeras páginas donde figuraban la Suma de Tasa del 17 del 9 de 1659, la licencia de la misma fecha y la Fe de Erratas de Carlos Murcia de la LLana en Madrid 15 del 9 de 1659, CONSERVANDO ESO SI como ya hemos referido, las dos aprobaciones del año 1625, la dedicatoria del impresor y el prólogo del autor de la primera edición. El autor jienense, sería elogiado por escritores de primera línea, como Lope de Vega, Ruiz de Alarcón, Vélez de Guevara, Suárez de Figueroa, Pérez de Montalbán, Polo de Molina, José de Valdivielso, Baltasar Gracián, Francisco Santos, Calderón de la Barca, Rojas Zorrilla, F. López de Zárate, Juan Bautista Diamante. aunque también encontró la enemistad frontal y manifiesta de Quevedo, situación que ambos mantuvieron de por vida. ESGRIMA. SIGLO DE ORO ESPAÑOL. Verificándose solamente unas 9 ediciones de esta MUY RARA impresión madrileña en instituciones españolas y extranjeras.

Primera edición, obra póstuma publicada por D. Manuel de Sossa, quien la dedicó a Carlos II. Enrique de Leguina dice que se han detectado ejemplares con diferentes portadas y tip…os; se debió editar también con 15 hojas de preliminares, sin la portadilla, nuestro ejemplar concuerda exactamente con el de la British Library. El manuscrito original del libro, escrito en 1625, se conserva en la Biblioteca Nacional. Dice Lórenz de Rada que Pacheco dejó encargado en su testamento a su discípulo Juan Andrea Calvo, perfeccionase la Nueva Ciencia y pusiera las Demostraciones, pero éste murió sin cumplir la voluntad del maestro. Vingeant dice que el hijo de Pacheco y Narváez enriqueció el tratado con extractos y citas de otros autores cuyos nombres consigna. Nuestro ejemplar tiene 15 hojas de preliminares, sin la anteportada que se encuentra en otros; sin embargo no parece faltarle y concuerda exactamente con el ejemplar de la British Library. Buen ejemplar, generalmente limpio salvo alguna mancha ocasional. 192x143mm. (7½x5¾").

Luis Pacheco de Narv…áez, natural de Baeza, fue muy conocido entre la nobleza española durante los reinados de Felipe III y Felipe IV, dedicando al primero sus libros y enseñando al segundo el manejo de las armas bajo el honorable título de maestro mayor del Rey. Está considerado como una figura primordial de la escuela de esgrima española denominada Verdadera Destreza, sistema conceptual y metodológico mediante el que se explican todas las acciones y toda la realidad presente en un combate con espadas, que es lo que denominamos "ciencia". El objetivo del libro es contestar al Compendio que hizo Luis de Carmona, en defensa de la doctrina de Carranza, y al mismo tiempo, contradecir y refutar muchas de las afirmaciones de este. Muy buen ejemplar impreso sobre fuerte papel de hilo. 221x150mm. (8¾x6").

Sexta edición de esta obra import…ante de la esgrima española que tuvo una gran influencia escrita por el maestro Luis Pacheco, el único tratadista junto a Carranza capaz de crear una escuela de la que saldrían más tarde muchos de los más importantes esgrimidores del siglo XVII. La primera edición se publicó en 1635. Pacheco fue un renombrado esgrimidor, maestro mayor de esgrima de Felipe IV a quien no hubo en su tiempo quien igualara como maestro de esgrima. Creó una escuela filosófico-matemática en la cual utiliza fórmulas teóricas y preconiza la geometría de la esgrima según un sistema basado en ángulos y círculos dentro de los que debe combatir el diestro. 140x90mm. First edition, very scarce, of this novel by the seventeenth-century Spanish courtier and fencing master to Philip IV, Luis Pacheco de Narváez (1570-1640). This baroque tale, penned during the Thirty Years' War, focuses on the misfortunes of its parallel heroines Clauela and Laurena, one from Burgos, in the north of Spain, the other from Seville. A classic courtly novel, the work is a moralistic, almost hagiographic, treatment of female constancy, but also has a picaresque quality, featuring intrigue, travel, and shipwreck. The work represents a curious digression for Pacheco de Narváez, who is best known as a courtier and fencing master to 'El Rey Planeta', Philip IV of Spain, and as the author of various works on fencing, swordplay, and feats of arms. The work is dedicated to Doña Catalina Chacon y Rojas, wife of the Mayor of Écija. Like many cities in the province of Seville, Écija had its heyday in the Golden Age, bolstered by the influx of wealth from Spain's colonial expansion. Scarce; we can locate just eight institutional copies (BL, NLS, BNE, Tarragona, Dresden, Boston Public, Harvard, Wisconsin).
