Trouens, dit is 'n bekende feit dat die meeste van ons historici wat hulle met die Groot Trek as studietema bem…oei, van Smit weggeskram het omdat hy so 'n kontensieuse plek in die Groot Trek-tydperk inneem. Wat hom so belangrik maak is die feit dat hy 'n buitelander was wat aan die Trek deelgeneem het en daarom nie eintlik as Voortrekker geklassifiseer kan word nie. Sy Nederlandse opvoeding het hom intellektueel heelwat bo die meeste Trekkers geplaas en hom bevoeg gemaak om meer objektief oor dringende kwessies te oordeel. Daarby het hy in die hoofstroom van die Groot Trek beweeg en al die hoofmomente van die Trek meegemaak. As swaer van Gert Maritz en vertroueling van Piet Retief het hy die geleentheid gehad om persoonlik waar te neem wat in die binnekring van die Groot Trek gemeenskap gebeur. Uit hoofde van sy posisie as leraar was hy intiem gemoeid met die ontplooiing van die Trek en die botsings tussen pioniersgeeste soos Hendrik Potgieter, Piet Uys en Gert Maritz.

Sarel Arnoldus Cilliers (1801 - 1871), bekende Voortrekkerfiguur wat deur baie Afrikaners as "Profeet van die Groot Trek" en as "Vader van die Gelofte" bestempel word, is 'n afstammeling van die Franse Hugenote wat op eng puriteinse wyse opgevoed is. Va…n kindsbeen af was hy baie godsdienstig en het sy lewe lank streng sedelike norme gehandhaaf. Ofskoon Cilliers voortreflike prestasies gelewer het, onder meer as geestelike voorganger en leier vir 'n sekere deel van die Voortrekkers, onverskrokke krygsman tydens veldslae, politieke en kerklike figuur in Natal en die Oranje Vrystaat en direk betrokke by die stranding van die Waldensian naby Struisbaai in 1862, het hy ook tekortkominge gehad waaroor die sluier doelbewus getrek is. Daarom is dit nie net nog 'n biografie nie. Netelige knelvrae en wanopvattings in Afrikanerge ledere, onder meer oor die herdenking van die Gelofte, word indringend ontleed en nuwe lig word op Sarel Cilliers se betrokkenheid by die Gelofte en ander kontensieuse sake gewerp. Talle mites wat met verloop van tyd rondom sy persoon ontstaan het, is gekorrigeer en leemtes in ons kennis aan die tydvak word aangevul. Deurentyd is op streng wetenskaplike wyse met die primêre bronne en feite omgegaan en 'n herbeelding van die prominente figuur en era in ons verlede het uitgekristalliseer. Die doel was nie om te polemiseer nie, maar juis om wetenskaplike objektiwiteit na te streef.
