Half-Leather (Hardcover). Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Half-Leather (Hardcover), binding condition: Good, 27,5 x 22 cm, 220 pp., Dutch, 1st Edition, illustrations, book condition: Very Good Simple original half-leather binding, with gilded title on the spine. clear signs of use but still a very sturdy binding, all ten hand-colored illustrations are present in exceptionally good condition This work is based on Pallas' Miscellanea Zoologica or Spicilegia Zoologica. Pallas was known for his extensive expeditions through the Russian Empire, during which he identified numerous new species. Boddaert's translation made these scientific discoveries accessible to the Dutch public during the Enlightenment. Printed in Utrecht in 1770 by publishers Abraham van Paddenburgen and J. van Schoonhoven. The "Zoological Miscellany" of P.S. Pallas (translated by Boddaert) is a collection of various "pieces" in which a specific group or species is treated that was considered new or unknown at the time. The described animals vary greatly, as Pallas studied a wide range of fauna during his expeditions. The main groups covered in this work are: Mammals: Pallas was known for his detailed descriptions of rodents and ungulates from the Russian steppes. This work discusses rare species, such as the Saiga Antelope and various small mammals. Birds: Attention is given to various bird species, including the Snowy Owl and different types of Partridges and Curlews. Marine fauna (Sea creatures): A significant portion of the work is dedicated to invertebrate marine animals. This includes: o Polychaetes (bristle worms): Such as the Nereis cylindraria (now known as a type of tube worm). o Echinoderms: Descriptions of starfish and sea apples (sea urchins). o Mollusks: Various types of shells and "sea cats" (squid). Reptiles and Amphibians: Boddaert also added specific treatises on turtles and lizards. The book contains a total of 10 hand-colored engraved plates that depict these animals very accurately for scientific study. [This description may have been translated by AI.].

's Gravenhage, Isaac Du Mee, 1779-1781. Two parts in one. 8vo (22.2 x 13.3 cm). Title pages with woodcut vignette, xvi, 160; [ii], 220 pp.; six engraved plates (I-II; III-VI) of which five in beautiful original hand-colouring. Contemporary polished half calf over speckled boards. Spine with gilt ornamental bands, gilt bordered labels. = Boddaert's rarest work, published in two parts, and seldom seen complete. The Dutch zoologist and medical doctor Pieter Boddaert (1730-1796) was author of many original observations in natural history and medicine. Here, however, he translated and commented upon observations by other, mostly German, naturalists recently published in Der Naturforscher, including papers by its editor, Johann Ernst Immanuel Walch (with three plates, two dealing with molluscs, the other with butterflies), Chemnitz, Meinike, "Block" (i.e., Bloch), and others. Other subjects included deal with, e.g., mammals, birds, and mineralogy (with two fine, hand-coloured plates of gems and fossils). In the two parts published, text numbering starts anew, but plate numbering is consecutive. Fore edge uncut. A few tears into the text; two text leaves (pp. 125-126 on a bird; and 153-154 on insects) torn with text loss; otherwise very good, clean, unmarked, the plates very good. Landwehr, 143 (under Natuurbeschouwer, with Boddaert listed as editor).
