Whitmore (volumes 1 and 2); L.H.Young (volume 3), 1834-1837. Each bound in different contemporary quarter leather, gilt-lettered, and paper boards. A womanâs magazine, following th…e example of the recently created Motherâs Magazine of Utica, New York, but differing âinasmuch as it is devoted to interests of the wife as well as the mother, and designs to exhibit the influence of female character and conductâ¦â (the âIntroductory Appealâ). The first two volumes with original article such as "A Mother's Love", "Conjugal Happiness", "Lines Suggested by Bust of Madame de Stael", and known writers like Miss Jewsbury, Mrs. Hemans, S.T. Coleridge. At the end of v.2 is "The Editor's Farewell", magazine has not caught on with the public and v.3 will differ, still directed to women, edited by an unnamed woman. V.3 has the subtitle "A Literary and Religious Magazine", still containing original articles but full of reprints from known authors - Wordsworth, Coleridge, Joanna Baillie, George Herbert, Richter, Krumacher, Herder, only the second known review of Emerson's "Nature" (1836), and an excerpt from his "Phi Beta Kappa Address" (The American Scholar, 1837). The last words of the last issue - âThe End of The Microcosmâ. This New Haven "Microcosm" is not recorder in Mott, "A History of American Magazines", 1741-1850. 1957, nor in Chielens, "American Literary Magazines", 1986. Each volume with rubbing to leather and boards, two badly rubbed, the same two with joints starting, one of these with two inches of the spine gone.
