Den Portraits der Sprachgebiete sind drei einführende Kapitel vorangestellt: In Kapitel 2 werden die Begriffe francophone/francophonie beleuchtet; Kapitel 3 befasst sich mit grundlegenden Fragen im Zusammenhang mit der Erforschung der français régionaux, und Kapitel 4 ist den Typologisierungsversuchen für den an unterschiedlichen soziolinguistischen Konstellationen reichen espace francophone gewidmet. Die Kapitel zu den Sprachgebieten sind ähnlich aufgebaut und bieten Informationen über die aktuelle Situation (Sprachenrecht, Demographie), die Geschichte des Sprachraums, den Stand der linguistischen Beschreibung und Fragen der Sprachnorm. Jedes Kapitel mündet in Arbeitsaufgaben zur Vertiefung einzelner Aspekte des Informationsteils. Eine repräsentative Bibliographie schließt den Band ab.
