In his obituary Osborne's editor at the New Republic remembered him as "the best and sometimes the only way to make sense of what was going on in the White House was to wait for John Osborne's column in the New Republic. Mr. Osborne was a scrupulous, fair and painstaking reporter, a fine writer and an admirable, generous man." In spite of those qualities, or perhaps because of them, Osborne managed to make Nixon's infamous "Enemies List." Inscribed by Ehrlich on the title page: "For Carl & Estelle, with warm regards, Paul Ehrlich." A deeply influential and controversial book about overpopulation and resource scarcity that has defined Ehrlich's distinguished career and perhaps overshadowed his achievements in conservation biology.
