Las referencias a la respetuosa polémica herreriana entre Blecua y Macrí, los comentarios de Castellet, Biedma y Valente a la poesía guilleniana, las alusiones a los numerosos amigos comunes (los poetas del 27 o los colegas españoles y extranjeros) son sólo algunos de los muchos temas presentes en estas cartas que, subsiguiéndose con un ritmo constante durante treinta años nos permiten también seguir de cerca la intensa actividad de Guillén - sus conferencias, premios, viajes - y fijar la fecha de composición de algunos poemas. Además, a la gran amistad con Oreste Macrí se liga la vasta red de relaciones (atentamente enfocada en el estudio preliminar) que Guillén estableció con el grupo de poetas y críticos herméticos que solían reunirse en el Café Paszkowski de Florencia.
