Drawing together in-depth contributions by specialists in the field, this timely volume - the first of its kind in twenty-five years - offers new insights into seals and their importance during the relatively understudied Hellenistic period (c. 325-25 BCE), as well as contextualizing this subject through a focus on related fields such as glyptics and numismatics. The twelve chapters included here explore the importance of hoards, among them those from Delos, Doliche, Edfu, Kedesh, Pistiros, Seleucia-on-the-Tigris, Selinunte, and Uruk, and examine themes that range from the persistence of pharaonic imagery on Ptolemaic sealings and Greek influence on Sicilian seals, to the survival of Mesopotamian traditions on Parthian clay tablets and the use of Hellenistic iconography on Bactrian finger rings. Write…r, activist and publisher, June Degnan shaped the emerging San Francisco literary scene, publishing an obscure and luminous company who reshaped American literature. The first issue introduces the purpose of the review: "The policy of the San Francisco Review, simply stated, is to publish humane and original expressions of moral, intellectual or emotional individuality. We take this broad approach because we feel that current theories or rules of creative writing are inadequate. attention will be given in these pages to civil liberties and individual rights". The June Oppen Degnan Papers which document the history of the review are in Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego. Beginning in 1959, Degnan served as publisher, along with George Hitchcock and Roy Miller (publisher of the first issue in 1958) of the San Francisco Review, a journal of poetry and prose published in cooperation with New Directions book publishers of New York City, which published the review annuals, from 1963. New Directions often published (with Degnan's guidance and encouragement) books by writers who Degnan admired strongly -- writers who she published in the San Francisco Review. This appears to be the complete series. RARE.
