Since 1985, the Centre for Agriculture in the Tropics and Subtropics of the University of Hohenheim, Germany has been involved in research on agricultural problems in Niger and Benin with the Special research Programme 308 entitled "Adapted Farming in West Africa". In the Sahel, deforestation, overgrazing and declining soil fallow periods have resulted in increased wind erosion in the affected regions is a challenge that requires an interdisciplinary approach. An International Symposium on Wind Erosion in West Africa: the Problem and Its Control was organized by the University of Hohenheim on 5-7 December 1994. The conference brought together agronomists and extensionists, as well as project experts with on-farm experience in wind erosion control in the Sahel and other semi-arid zones of the world. This volume contains the papers presented during the conference and the recommendations of two working groups on technical aspects of the control measures and on the socio-economic and institutional constraints; the working groups have proposed further research needs and concepts for national and regional wnid erosion control programmes.
