Folio (355 x 270 mm), a good, uniform 5-volume set, bound in half green morocco with large corners, spines with raised bands, titles in gold, golden upper edge in each volume, a very clean and well-preserved set, in excellent condition (just the colour of morocco on spines now turning to brown, becaus…e of oxidization, as often). pp. xii, 250; viii, 266, viii, 252, viii, 256, viii, 325, (1) with altogether 407 beautiful coloured plates after original drawings by A.M. Koekoek. First edition. The work was originally published in 46 parts representing figures of all forms of wild birds observed in their natural surroundings in Holland. Since Schlegel issued his work "De vogels van Nederland", no comprehensive atlas of the birds of the Netherlands had been published. Each plate contains several figures of birds, the sexes, different ages, and, when necessary, seasonal variations are figured (Anker 381). The plates show the birds in their natural surroundings, and "are particularly good in showing different plumages" (Zimmer). Nissen ZBI 694.
