London: John Lee, 440 Strand, 1845. First edition. Original red publisher's cloth decorated in gilt and blind, with title and royal decorative devices to the front cover. Tinted lithographed Onwhyn title page present. Published in connection with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's early Georgian fancy-dress ball, held at Buckingham Palace on 6 June 1845. The work was originally issued with a tinted lithographed title and 11 hand-colored lithographed costume plates. This extra-illustrated copy contains the tinted Onwhyn title page and 5 of the 11 original hand-colored Onwhyn costume plates: Princess Ann; Princess Carolina; Lady Mary Boynton; Lady Fortescue; and Miss Hudson. Also included are more than 25 additional late-18th and early-19th-century hand-colored and engraved fashion and costume plates. These include French Costume Parisien plates from the Journal des Dames et des Modes and English plates depicting walking, morning, evening, carriage, court, and historical dress. More than 30 plates in total. The plates are presently loose within the original cloth covers.
